In August 2019, the Business Roundtable (BRT), a coalition of CEOs from top 200 U.S. companies, adopted the “Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation,” redefining corporate responsibility to include delivering value to all stakeholders—customers, employees, suppliers, and local communities. This marked a departure from the traditional principle of shareholder primacy, with leading corporations like Amazon, Apple, and GM endorsing the shift.

 

It is time for Korean corporations to embrace a new role that aligns with the evolving expectations of society. Addressing complex challenges such as climate change, social polarization, and pandemics requires more than just government involvement—it demands active corporate engagement. The Korean public increasingly expects businesses to take the lead in solving various social issues.
